Closer to the Heart – Site specific project deep under ground

Closer to the Heart dance installation project was performed in 1400 meter deep Pyhäsalmi Mine. The work was the opening piece in Full Moon Dance Festival of 2012. Choreographer Petri Kekoni ́s movement world and visual artist Mikko Hynninen ́s light and sound installations transformed the mine into a unique stage for two days in June 2012. The production of gives an insight on how versatile and ambitious projects Petri Kekoni Company is accustomed to fulfill. Closer to the Heart can be considered as a mother piece for Petri Kekoni Company’s ongoing site-specific dance project Non-Linear (2014,2015).

Kekoni Company built five gallery type of stages on the bottom of the mine, where 11 dancers were performing movement events for the whole performance duration. The audience could experience the performance in their own pace by following the orbit-like performance rout. Due to the unconventional performance venue the entrance to the space was an experience in it self. The performance started as a long travel to the bottom of the mine via 1400 metre long elevator shaft.

Closer to the Heart brings the audience literally closer to the earth’s core. The venue has a strong effect on the theme – the dance piece bares geological and planetary content. The choreography investigates also the concept of the heart as a nest for the emotions, as well as physical animalistic motor of life.
